About us

What is BAGS?

BAGS, the Bristol Anglo-German Society, was formed in the autumn of 1981 to further the interest of the people of Bristol and district in the German-speaking countries.  It is affiliated to the British German Association and is a registered charity.

How does BAGS achieve its aim?
By holding meetings with a speaker, holding German conversation groups and arranging social events.

Who are the speakers and what are the topics?
The speakers cover a wide range of topics in their talks.  Past subjects have included the Legend of Faust, the Swiss Economy, Literature in the former DDR, the Volkswagen Experience and the Plight of the Saxons in Transsylvania, to name but a few.  The speakers are all experts in their own subjects.  Some talks are in German, some in English.

Are the conversation group all fluent German speakers?
No.  Some are.  However, others are beginners.  The group caters for all abilities.

What does affiliation to the BGA mean?
The British German Association organises occasional events including study tours in Germany and conferences in London.  These are available to members of BAGS.

Where are meetings held?
Most lecture meetings are held in the staff common room of Bristol University's Modern Languages Department.  This is on Woodland Road, Bristol.

Supper meetings are generally held at the Commonwealth Club, Whiteladies Road.

Conversation evenings are held at a private address in St. Andrews - please contact us for details.
